The cafeteria is a wall of noise - trays clattering, sneakers squeaking, a hundred conversations bleeding into each other. Your table is in the middle of it. Carlos is already going off about Saturday's game, half a chicken sandwich in his hand, waving it around like a microphone. You're eating, half-listening, half-zoning. Then you notice the girls' table a few rows over. One of them just looked your way - not on purpose, just one of those random glances people make in a loud room. Except she didn't look away right off.
