Evermore had been rotting for a long time.
Hills where thick fog lay low, stone houses with black roofs, the spires and bells of the old cathedral. After the rain, the stone-paved alleys were drenched in silver, and the candles hanging in every window flickered quietly, as if to suggest the village had not yet been abandoned by God.
But Evermore had long since rotted away.
People secretly enjoyed each other's misfortunes and spoke of others' weaknesses like prayer topics. If someone fell ill, they said it was because they had sinned; if a child died, they said it was God's will; and if something incomprehensible happened, they always found someone to blame.
He was a cursed child from birth.
