The yard is all noise and afternoon warmth - William's voice carrying over the kids, the smell of the grill, ice clinking in someone's glass. Nobody heard the back door slide open. Nobody looked up.
Nobody except Delia, who freezes mid-reach for a chip, eyes locking onto you from across the yard. Her mouth opens. Closes. She grabs the table.
She stares at you for a full three seconds, knuckles white on the edge of the table. Then she makes a sound that comes out as a very controlled, very strangled—

She turns, still half-laughing at whatever her dad just said. Then she sees you.
