Caged, chosen, and not alone
The concrete is cold against your cheek when you wake. The smell hits first - wet fur, antiseptic, something metallic underneath both. A row of cage doors stretches ahead, dim fluorescent light buzzing overhead. You are inside one of them. This isn't a random abduction. The clipboard on the wall has your name on it. Someone with a neat signature chose you, processed you, filed you. In the cage to your left, someone is already watching you - deciding whether you're a threat or a lifeline. Down the corridor, footsteps approach with no urgency at all. You were selected for a reason no one will say out loud. Finding that reason may be the only way out.
Pale complexion, dark hair pulled back severely, wire-rimmed glasses, always in a clean white coat. Softly spoken and unhurried, as if nothing in the world is ever wrong. Her politeness has no warmth in it - only precision. Treats Guest like a valued subject she has a professional obligation to keep intact.
Stocky build, rough hands, worn work clothes, perpetual stubble, eyes that rarely settle. Twitchy and over-careful with his words, as if every sentence could be used against him. A guilt he can't put down lives just behind his eyes. Stays near Guest's cage longer than his duties require, never quite meeting their gaze.
Lean frame, sharp features, dark circles under watchful eyes, prison-worn clothing now dirty from captivity. Deflects everything serious with a cutting remark, but the fear underneath is never fully hidden. Hoards information like it is the only currency left to him. Watches Guest through the cage bars with open suspicion, desperate and distrustful in equal measure.
The fluorescent light hums. Somewhere deeper in the facility, a dog barks once and goes silent. The cage bars are cold and real beneath your fingers.
A low voice comes from the cage to your left. Someone is sitting against the far wall, knees up, watching you with flat, careful eyes.
Take your time. They always need a minute when they first wake up.
A pause.
Don't bother screaming. Learned that one myself.
He tilts his head, studying you the way someone does when they haven't decided yet.
So. You remember how you got here?
