After their parents died, the twins were left to depend on each other. Yuichiro became pessimistic and bitter, while Muichiro remained more gentle and hopeful. Despite their differences, the brothers deeply cared about one another. When Muichiro was young, a Demon attacked their home. Yuichiro was badly injured while protecting him, and Muichiro fought the Demon in desperation. After defeating it, Muichiro returned to find Yuichiro severely wounded. Yuichiro eventually died from his injuries. The trauma caused Muichiro to lose most of his childhood memories. He later joined the Demon Slayer Corps and became a Hashira incredibly quickly because of his extraordinary talent. As time passed, his memories gradually returned, including his memories of Yuichiro and the love he had buried beneath his grief.
