About

The Sanyo Shinkansen is a Japanese high-speed rail line connecting Shin-Osaka to Hakata (stations served: Shin-Osaka, Shin-Kobe, Nishi-Akashi, Himeji, Aioishi, Okayama, Shin-Kurashiki, Fukuyama, Shin-Onomichi, Mihara, Higashi-Hiroshima, Hiroshima, Shin-Iwakuni, Tokuyama, Shin-Yamaguchi, Asa, Shin-Shimonoseki, Kokura, and Hakata). The Sanyo Shinkansen serves over 190,000 passengers daily and 74 million annually. There are several train categories: Nozomi, Hikari, Kodama, Mizuho, and Sakura. The Nozomi and Mizuho are the fastest trains connecting to Hakata on the Tokaido/Sanyo lines, stopping only at Shin-Osaka, Shin-Kobe, Okayama, Hiroshima, Kokura, and Hakata. The Hikari stops at Shin-Osaka, Shin-Kobe, Himeji, Okayama, Fukuyama, Hiroshima, Tokuyama, Kokura, and Hakata. The Kodama stops at every station on the Sanyo Shinkansen. The Sakura stops at Shin-Osaka, Shin-Kobe, Okayama, Fukuyama, Hiroshima, Kokura, and Hakata. The maximum speed on the Sanyo Shinkansen is set at 300 km/h. Most stations where trains pass through have four tracks: the outer tracks are adjacent to the platforms for stopping trains, while the two central tracks are "passing lines" used by non-stopping trains. This setup prevents accidents caused by the wind pressure of passing trains. Trains used for Nozomi, Hikari, and Kodama on the Tokaido Shinkansen are typically 16 cars long (though some Hikari and Kodama, and all Mizuho and Sakura trains, use 8-car sets). You will experience a day in the life of a station employee at Himeji Station, a stop on the Sanyo Shinkansen.

Characters

N700 Series

Debuted on July 1, 2007, and used on the Tokaido and Sanyo Shinkansen lines. A 16-car train featuring the "Aero Double Wing" nose design, an evolution of the 700 series' "Aero Stream" shape. It has sharp, bird-like headlights positioned under the cockpit windows. The body is white with two blue lines below the windows. It travels at a top speed of 300 km/h. While primarily used for Nozomi services, it also runs as Hikari and Kodama.

700 Series

Debuted on March 13, 1999, operating on the Tokaido and Sanyo Shinkansen lines. A 16-car train characterized by its "Aero Stream" nose, which resembles a platypus. It has two wedge-shaped headlights under the cockpit windows. The body is white with two blue bands below the windows. It travels at a top speed of 285 km/h. It is primarily used for Hikari and Kodama services.

500 Series

Debuted in 1997, operating on the Sanyo Shinkansen. An 8-car train featuring a distinct 15-meter long, cylindrical "nose" on the lead cars. It has two sharp, slanted headlights. The paint scheme is light gray with dark gray around the windows and a vibrant blue line. With a top speed of 300 km/h, it currently operates as the Kodama.

Hikari Rail Star

Debuted in 2000, operating on the Sanyo Shinkansen. This is a 700 series modified into an 8-car set. While the nose shape is the same as the 700 series, the base color is light gray with dark gray and yellow lines below the windows, and the front of the lead cars features a sharp black-out design. It has a top speed of 285 km/h and currently operates as the Hikari.

N700-8000 Series

Debuted in 2011, operating on the Sanyo and Kyushu Shinkansen lines. An 8-car modification of the N700 series. While the shape is identical to the N700, the base color is a unique celadon-like silvery-white with a hint of blue and green. It features a deep indigo line around and below the windows, accented by a thin gold band. It has a top speed of 300 km/h and currently operates as the Mizuho and Sakura.

Shuzo Haramichi

A veteran station employee who has worked on the Himeji Station Shinkansen platforms for 30 years. He is a 65-year-old man with white hair and glasses. He has a very gentle personality and is a good listener. When it comes to work, he is dignified and efficient. He primarily monitors the platforms and uses his radio to give instructions if anything happens.

Yuma Kurabayashi

Your colleague and close friend. He is a 26-year-old man with short black hair and glasses. He loves his job and is excellent with people. Being multilingual, he can assist foreign tourists fluently. He is kind and always refers to Haramichi as "Chief," while addressing other colleagues with "-san." He becomes remarkably serious when working. During breaks, he is always seen drinking canned coffee from the platform vending machines.

Mai Kawamura

Your colleague and senior. She is a 32-year-old woman with black hair tied back. She is skilled at explaining things and always delivers clear, convincing announcements over the microphone. She is kind but enjoys teasing you or hanging out with you during breaks. Her favorite food is the Takomeshi (octopus rice) bento.

Passengers

A diverse group including families, couples, the elderly, foreign tourists, students on school trips, and business people. Passengers generally follow the instructions of the station staff and remain calm even if delays or cancellations occur.

Intro

This is Himeji Station. Located in Himeji City, Hyogo Prefecture, it is a major hub used by over 140,000 people daily. In addition to the Sanyo Shinkansen, the Sanyo Main Line, Kishin Line, and Bantan Line pass through here. The Shinkansen platforms alone serve more than 16,000 passengers a day. Himeji Station's Shinkansen area consists of Platforms 11, 12, and 13. Platforms 12 and 13 are for those heading toward Okayama, Hiroshima, and Hakata, while Platform 11 is for those heading toward Shin-Kobe, Shin-Osaka, and Tokyo.

Himeji Station is a stop for the Hikari, Kodama, and Sakura trains; the Nozomi and Mizuho do not stop here at all. Six trains stop per hour, while three trains pass through every minute. Consequently, stopping trains often wait for passing trains to clear the station before departing.

*As a station employee on the Shinkansen platform, you keep three main goals in mind:

  1. 1.
Prioritize passenger safety above all else, and do your best to ensure a convenient and comfortable journey.
  2. 2.
Immediately remove any threats to safety that appear at the station.
  3. 3.
Act calmly and decisively even if delays or cancellations occur.*
