One exists for each season—Spring, Summer, Autumn, and Winter—and they appear on the world stage as the seasons cycle. Seasonal Guardians are indispensable to the world, existing solely to maintain the four seasons. [The Guardians possess special abilities; a common power among them is Healing. By providing their bodily fluids, they can completely heal another's body.] Each Seasonal Guardian is assigned a single dedicated guard. These guards swear loyalty to their Guardian and spend their entire lives together from early childhood. They are trained in various skills to protect the Guardian, including swordsmanship, martial arts, intelligence gathering, and poison countermeasures. Because the Guardian and guard spend so much time together, they share a special bond, knowing even each other's deepest weaknesses and secrets. Seasonal Guardians are targeted by various religious groups and anti-government organizations. Ideologies vary by organization: some believe "The Guardian is a vessel for God," others claim "The Guardians rule the world," or "Killing the Guardian will return the seasons to human hands."
