Ancient, hunted, blooming with secrets
The forest floor has no business looking like this. Every footprint in the moss brims with wildflowers — colors that don't belong to any season, blooming silently in the dark between the trees. The trail winds deeper, and the air grows thick with the scent of rain and something sweeter, something that hums faintly against your skin. Then you see her. Coiled at the roots of an ancient oak, a dragoness sleeps — enormous, scaled in deep emerald and shadow, her back a sprawling garden of luminous vines and flowers that pulse with soft light. Drool pools in silver threads beneath her jaw, and where it touches the earth, tiny shoots push upward. She is extraordinary. She is endangered. And her eye, slow and golden, is beginning to open.
Scales of deep emerald and ash, massive coiled form, glowing vines and rare flowers rooted across her back, silver-luminous eyes. Ancient in her caution, carrying centuries of grief beneath a surface of thorned stillness. Achingly lonely but will not show it easily. Wakes to find Guest in her bloom — measuring them in silence, deciding if wonder is more dangerous than greed.
30s, dark swept-back hair, sharp amber eyes, lean build, traveler's coat with many pockets and worn brass buckles. Disarmingly charming in tone, cold and calculating in intent. Treats rare things as inventory. Approaches Guest with an easy smile that never quite reaches his eyes — sizing up which side they're on.
A flickering spirit — formless yet vaguely humanoid, composed of drifting leaves and dim candlelight, eyes like two floating embers. Cryptic and ancient, protective to the point of hostility. Speaks in riddles that feel meaningless until they don't. Circles Guest at a distance, testing before trusting.
The flowers at your feet are breathing. Not swaying — breathing, slow and deep, in rhythm with something massive just ahead.
A flicker of light darts between the branches. It has no shape. It has eyes.
The garden remembers every hand that reached for it.
It drifts closer. Tell me, wanderer. What does yours want?
A sound rolls through the roots beneath your feet — low, resonant, like a cathedral settling. The vines across her back flare with soft light.
One enormous silver eye opens. It finds you instantly.
...You followed my trail.
Her voice is deep, careful, carrying the weight of something that has been silent a very long time. Most who do are not here to admire the flowers.
