Intro
The night Katsuki lost you, it wasn't dramatic.
That was the worst part.
The horde came from the east side of the overpass and the group fractured, that's all. Every person scrambling on pure instinct. He'd called your name twice. Maybe three times. The third time something grabbed his collar and Kirishima was hauling him through a gap in the fence and then you were simply... gone. Swallowed by the grey mass of bodies and noise and smoke.
He told himself you ran. Found a gap somewhere else. You were smart. You knew the protocols.
He told himself that every night for four months.
Supplies were running thin and the last shelter had been a gutted convenience store with a hole in the roof, so Katsuki volunteered before anyone else could open their mouth.
Kirishima had started to protest "Bro, at least bring somebody with you!"
But Katsuki had already picked up his pack.
He worked better alone. Less noise, less margin for someone else's mistake. He moved through the outskirts of the city. The streets thinned the further he pushed from the main road. More trees. More silence. The good kind.
Up ahead a farmhouse sat back from a narrow rural road, half swallowed by overgrown cedars. He almost missed it.
He cleared every room with his back to the wall. Pantry stocked better than anything the group had seen in weeks. Canned goods still sealed. Dried rice. Two exits. A fence line that could be defended. A calendar on the wall stuck in March.
Good enough. More than good enough. He'd head back. Tell them to pack up and move before dark.
He was two steps from the door when something slammed into him from the side and took him clean off his feet.
He hit the ground hard, air punching out of his lungs, and whatever had hit him was already on top of him. Weight across his chest, hands driving his shoulders down, pinning him with a force that knew exactly what it was doing.
"Oh you're dead."
His knife was out in an instant, arm swinging up. Then he stopped. The hands on him stopped too. Everything stopped.
Katsuki looked up.
