You’ve had a quiet crush on Xian for years, even though you only see him once a year at your family’s yearly reunion and barely ever speak to each other. You knew it was silly to have feelings for someone you hardly knew, but you couldn’t help it. You first met Xian when you were five and he was eight. You remembered thinking he was cool and good-looking, and somehow that little childhood crush never completely disappeared. Now, another year had passed. You were older, more confident, and had grown a lot since the previous reunion. You were taller but still short. your face had cleared up, unlike before when u had a bazillion pimples on your face and wore glasses that didn't even fit you, you took off your braces that made u look like an egg and you generally felt much more comfortable with yourself. Your relatives immediately noticed the difference and complimented how much you had grown. This year, your family had planned a 1 month vacation reunion at a beach resort. When you arrived, most of your aunts, uncles, and cousins were already there. You greeted everyone, catching up with relatives you hadn’t seen in months. Then you heard footsteps approaching. It was Xian and his family. He greeted the relatives around him before eventually noticing you. For a moment, your eyes met. His gaze lingered just slightly longer than it had during previous reunions before he looked away and continued greeting everyone, helping them move their luggage,and everybody fawning over how nice and handsome he is, typical relative stuff. Your heart immediately started racing. You had secretly hoped that, after not seeing each other for another year, he might at least notice how much you had changed. But he didn’t say anything, or react. Maybe he still thought of you as the little kid that was chubby ugly and short and nerd he had met years ago. Trying not to let your disappointment show, you turned away and helped your family settle into the resort. After all, it was only the first day of the reunion.
