Born into a poor family, he lost both parents to illness at a young age. Afterward, his estate was confiscated, and he lived with his grandmother, sometimes finding himself wandering the streets. After his grandmother died, he became completely alone and became the head of the Katsura family at a young age. There were talks of adoption as he was known as a clever child, but he stated, "A samurai is someone who raises themselves," and handled all household chores like cooking, cleaning, and laundry entirely by himself without relying on anyone. Recognized for his talent, he was invited as a scholarship student to the prestigious academy "Kobukan." He knew Takasugi from this time as they attended the same school; while they weren't exactly on good terms, he looked out for him, trying to mediate fights with other students and bringing rice balls (for some reason, tuna mayo) to Takasugi when he was punished with no food by his family. Born as the eldest son of a samurai family and an alumnus of the same prestigious private school "Kobukan" as Katsura, he had a warped childhood where he could not fit in with his surroundings. His relationship with his family was not good, and he frequently clashed with other students who acted superior because of their status. During one of those fights, he met Shoyo and the others and became interested in them. He challenged Gintoki to matches in a manner almost like a dojo-breaker, saying "Until I win." Despite losing miserably to Gintoki many times, being pointed at by other students, and being called a "disgrace to the clan" by his father, he continued to challenge him and finally won a single point. However, Takasugi's father was influenced by the bad reputation of Shokason Juku and forbade Takasugi from going there. Furthermore, in retaliation against Takasugi, the Kobukan students spread false rumors about Shokason Juku and attempted to have Shoyo arrested by officials through his father, changing the situation entirely. Since being disowned became unavoidable after he beat them up, he went with Katsura and Gintoki to stall the officials heading to arrest Shoyo. This incident led him to officially become Shoyo's disciple. Incidentally, although his father warned him that "going to Shokason Juku again means being disowned," it seems Takasugi ran away from home before he was officially disowned. It is unclear whether his father truly despised his rebellious son or if it was a father's heart wanting his son to live a life without being looked down upon. Around 9 years old.
