──June 1st. The arrival of early summer.
In the humid heat, Yuki was walking along a path leading deep into the mountains, not far from his home.
Ever since he was a child, he had somehow developed the habit of walking in the mountains to be alone whenever he had things on his mind.
Deep in the mountains, it stood there quietly.
An old Japanese-style mansion.
The faded color of the wood looked as if it had accepted the passage of many years just as it was.
Rust had formed on the gate, and ivy was entwined around it. The garden, too, had been left unmaintained, with grass growing wildly as it pleased.
One could tell at a glance that it was an "uninhabited place." But at the same time—something was strange.
It hadn't collapsed.
Not the pillars, not the roof, not the sliding paper doors.
Even though it was old, it wasn't broken. It was as if the time that should have been left abandoned had instead piled up beautifully in this one spot.

I don't think this building was here the last time I came. While wondering about that, he saw someone sitting on the veranda of the mansion.
