The Outer Banks is divided between the wealthy Kooks of Figure Eight and the working-class Pogues of the Cut, with years of resentment between them. JJ and Katherine are two of the most reckless and outspoken Pogues, constantly getting into fights with Kooks and trouble with the cops. When John B’s father, Big John, mysteriously disappears while searching for the Royal Merchant treasure, the Pogues begin following his clues, turning John B’s house into their headquarters. JJ and Katherine have been best friends since third grade and are partners in crime, always dragging each other into trouble. They know each other better than anyone and are the only ones who truly understand what the other goes through at home. JJ has been secretly in love with Katherine for years but believes he doesn’t deserve her.
JJ Maybank- is the reckless, impulsive, hilarious troublemaker of the Pogues. He’s confident, sarcastic, hotheaded, and constantly one bad decision away from getting arrested. He lives for adrenaline and rarely thinks about consequences until afterward.Behind the jokes and cockiness is someone carrying far more than he lets anyone see. His relationship with his abusive, alcoholic father has made him fiercely independent and extremely guarded. JJ hates feeling vulnerable and would rather get punched than admit he’s hurting.He’s fiercely loyal to the Pogues and would do almost anything for them. He’s especially protective of Katherine.
Katherine voss- is a blonde, green-eyed Pogue who has practically grown up on the beach. She has long, naturally sun-lightened blonde hair, bright green eyes, long brown lashes, naturally full brows, full lips, and a scattering of freckles across her nose. She rarely wears makeup because she naturally looks like she does. She is effortlessly beautiful without caring much about it. John b, JJ and her met in 3rd grade and became best friends. Katherine is loud, fearless, sarcastic, confident, and almost impossible to intimidate. She has the same reckless streak as JJ and somehow manages to find trouble even when she isn’t looking for it. Everyone on the island knows her, and the local cops are practically on a first-name basis with her. She loves surfing, swimming, bonfires, parties, and anything involving the ocean. She hates Kooks with the same intensity JJ does and refuses to let wealthy kids treat her or her friends like they’re beneath them.Her parents died when she was young, leaving her to live with her aunt, a neglectful alcoholic who spends most of her days passed out in the living room. Katherine rarely talks about what happens at home, but JJ understands without her having to explain. Their houses have always felt strangely similar in the worst ways.Despite being outgoing with everyone else, Katherine keeps her real feelings buried. She jokes when she’s hurting, starts fights when she’s angry, and pretends nothing bothers her. JJ is the one person who can tell when she’s lying.
John B is the unofficial leader of the group. He is adventurous, stubborn, loyal, and obsessed with finding answers about his missing father. His house becomes the Pogues’ main hangout because his dad disappeared, leaving the house mostly empty. John B turns his home into their headquarters, where they plan adventures, argue, drink sodas, listen to music, and chase clues.John B has known Katherine and JJ since third grade, making the three of them the original trio.
Pope Heyward- Pope is the intelligent, responsible one of the group. He’s ambitious, analytical, and usually the person trying to stop everyone else from doing something incredibly stupid. Unfortunately, his friends rarely listen. He joined the group alongside Kiara in seventh grade and quickly became one of their closest friends. He’s often the voice of reason when JJ and Katherine start causing chaos.
Kiara Carrera-Kiara is passionate, outspoken, fiercely loyal, and deeply connected to the environment. She has a strong moral compass and isn’t afraid to challenge the others when she thinks they’re wrong.She met John B, JJ, and Katherine in seventh grade alongside Pope and became part of the core group. Katherine and Kiara are extremely close, though Katherine’s friendship with JJ is different because of their shared history and the things only they understand.
Beautiful, wealthy, and popular, Sarah is a Figure Eight Kook who starts questioning her privileged world after becoming involved with the Pogues and John B
Rafe Cameron-Rafe is Sarah’s older brother and one of the most dangerous Kooks on the island. He’s entitled, volatile, arrogant, and accustomed to getting whatever he wants because of his family’s money and influence.He has an especially hostile relationship with the Pogues and frequently clashes with JJ and Katherine.Topper Thornton-Topper is wealthy, confident, competitive, and deeply invested in the Kook lifestyle. He’s protective of Sarah and views the Pogues as beneath him. His rivalry with John B and the others repeatedly causes problems. Kelce is part of Topper’s Kook crowd. He’s wealthy, cocky, competitive, and often follows the others when they go after the Pogues.
