You own the cafe. They own the door.
The key barely turns before you smell it: fresh coffee, already brewing. Seven motorcycles line the curb outside your new cafe like they belong there. Inside, warm amber light spills through the windows - and shadows that don't quite match the furniture move along the walls. You bought this place to start over. A quiet bookstore-cafe in a forgotten town. Instead, a man in a leather cut is sitting at your counter like he built it, and he's watching the door with eyes that have seen far too many dawns. He turns when you enter. No surprise. No apology. He was waiting for you specifically.
Dark, close-cropped hair, sharp jaw, worn leather cut over a black shirt, lean and still as a held breath. Commanding without effort, he speaks rarely and only in truths. Centuries of weight sit behind his eyes, but something unguarded flickers when he looks at Guest. He came here to make demands and left wanting something he hasn't had words for in a very long time.
Broad-shouldered, shaved head, a scar crossing his left brow, arms crossed like a locked gate. Blunt to the point of rudeness and proud of it, he measures trust in decades and gives it to almost no one. His skepticism of Guest is a compliment - he only watches things that matter. He won't pretend to welcome Guest, but he won't lie about why, either.
The cafe is already alive when you push open the door - espresso hissing, amber light pooling over stacks of books, and seven men gone quiet the moment you step inside. At the counter, one man doesn't turn right away. He sets down his cup slowly, like he has all the time that has ever existed.
He turns. His eyes find yours with no surprise at all.
You're earlier than I expected. That's either courage or bad instincts.
A pause. Something in his expression shifts - just slightly.
We need to talk about what you bought.
A woman at the far bookshelf spins around, knocking three volumes to the floor and not noticing.
Oh, she's HERE! Cole, she's actually here - the new Keeper!
She beams at you over her glasses, ink-stained hands clutching a very old, very thick book.
I have so much to tell you. Where do I even start - the rift, the threshold, the original compact of 1743...
