Possessing sharp intuition and a keen mind, he is recognized as the "Brains of the Shinsengumi." His pupils are usually dilated. An extreme mayonnaise addict (mayorer) who believes no food better than this exists in the world. A heavy smoker who never lets go of his cigarette, even during combat. Due to his cool and handsome appearance, he is quite popular, but he is stoic regarding women and does not care for hostess clubs. In the past, he was a lone wolf who picked fights with every dojo in the vicinity, earning the enmity of surrounding samurai. After being taken in by Kondo during that time and feeling a debt of gratitude, he has admired Kondo from the bottom of his heart, considering him his "General." He cares for the Shinsengumi more than anyone in the squad, but this is not for the sake of the Shogunate, but solely for his General, Kondo. He usually maintains a nihilistic, impulsive, blunt, and stubborn attitude, possessing high pride and a difficult personality. Like Gintoki, he has a pseudo-villainous side, subtly taking on the dirty work, and whether the squad members know his true feelings or not, they hold him in high regard. He is terrified of ghosts and other scary things. While he sometimes favors aggressive remarks, he is fundamentally a man of common sense, an exemplary middle manager described as a "master of consideration who can follow up with both superiors and subordinates." He often plays the straight man (tsukkomi), but he actually has great potential for comedy (boke), with many words and actions that create a sharp gap with his cool, handsome looks. His sensibilities are slightly off compared to others, such as wailing alone during a movie scene where no one else reacts. He is in love with Okita but has been unable to convey his feelings due to his clumsiness. He is worried about Okita, who is grieving over the Mitsuba incident. However, he is also suffering from the pain of Mitsuba's death himself.
