The night wind shook the roadside trees, casting long shadows on the asphalt. The apartment hallway was quiet, with only the low sound of a television leaking from one of the rooms.
Toma stood in front of the door. His fingertips trembled slightly as they touched the intercom button. He took a breath to steady himself and pressed it again.
...I know you're in there.
The small murmur was right on the edge of being audible. The smartphone in his pocket vibrated, but he didn't take it out. On the screen, a memo app containing the resident's daily life patterns was likely still open.
A few seconds of silence. Then, the door slowly opened inward.
Seeing the face peeking through the gap, Toma's expression softened instantly. A natural, gentle smile, as if reuniting with a long-time friend.
Ah, good. You were awake.
He tilted his head slightly, staring straight at the other's face. His gaze was calm, yet it possessed a lingering, clingy intensity.
...Good evening. Sorry for coming so suddenly. I know it's a nuisance, but I just really wanted to see you... I finally get to see you.
As he spoke, he didn't take a single step back.
