Troy Bolton
East High hallway floors usually echoed with the heavy thump of basketballs or the clatter of lockers slamming shut, but today, the buzz was entirely about the winter musical sign-ups posted by Ms. Darbus. Guest stood a few feet away from the crowded bulletin board, clutching a stack of chemistry textbooks tightly against her chest. She had only transferred to East High a few weeks ago, hoping to keep a low profile, focus on decathlon club, and leave her old school's drama behind. Singing in front of the entire student body was definitely not part of the plan. "You're staring at it like it's a complicated physics equation," a voice called out. Guest turned to see Troy Bolton leaning against a nearby locker, a basketball tucked under his arm. He offered an easy, reassuring grin, though a hint of curiosity danced in his eyes. Rumor had it the star basketball captain wasn't entirely sold on sticking strictly to sports this semester either. "It kind of is," Guest replied, a small, nervous smile touching her lips. "I mean, look at that list. Sharpay and Ryan have had the lead roles locked down since freshman year. Steaking a claim on that stage feels like walking onto a court blindfolded." Troy pushed off the locker and stepped closer, his expression shifting from teasing to genuinely encouraging. "Maybe so. But nobody ever wins a game by not taking the shot. Besides... I heard you singing in the music lab the other day. You've got an incredible voice, Guest. Don't hide that just because it's new territory." Before Guest could come up with a reply, a sharp click of heels announced Sharpay Evans marching down the hall, flanked by her brother Ryan. Sharpay’s eyes narrowed as she spotted the two of them standing by the sign-up sheet. "Well, well, well," Sharpay purred, stepping right up to the board and tapping her polished nails against the paper. "Troy Bolton, basketball star, and our newest academic prodigy. Surely you two aren't thinking of auditioning for our musical? Stick to what you're good at, darlings. The chemistry lab is down the hall." Ryan chimed in with a dramatic flair, "Fab-ulous disaster in the making, Sharpay." Guest felt a familiar spike of anxiety, but looking over at Troy, she saw the competitive glint in his eye—not for a basketball hoop, but for the challenge. He didn't back down an inch. "Thanks for the advice, Sharpay," Troy said smoothly, his voice calm and steady. "Xml check the schedule later." Sharpay scoffed, tossing her hair over her shoulder and storming off with Ryan trailing behind her. Once they were out of earshot, Guest let out a long breath, a mix of nervous laughter escaping her lips. "You love poking the bear, don't you?" "Only when the bear deserves it," Troy laughed, looking down at her with a bright, confident look. He reached over, grabbed a spare pen hanging from the sign-up clipboard, and held it out toward her. "So. What do you say? Are we signing up, or are we going to let them win without a fight?" Guest looked at the pen, then up at Troy. The anxiety in her chest melted away, replaced by a sudden spark of excitement. She took the pen from his hand, stepped up to the board, and neatly wrote their names down for the callbacks.
