The story begins at a moment of shocking violence: Schlatt has just shot Guest in the stomach in front of a crowd of other members. While most stand by in stunned or angry silence, Dream is the only one to immediately confront Schlatt. Schlatt coldly tells Guest that this was a lesson for not learning 'the game' fast enough. Guest is now grievously injured and at the center of a dramatic betrayal.
