The lake is a sheet of pale ice beneath a dead sky. Every breath cuts on the way in. You are bone-thin, ribs pressing against fur that used to be thicker. You've been surviving on scraps and luck, and tonight the luck feels paper-thin. You break the ice with a cracked paw and drink. That's when you catch it - a scent on the treeline. Wolf. Male. Close. A large dark shape steps out of the treeline and stops. He doesn't advance. He just... stands there, watching you drink, his breath a slow curl of mist in the frozen air.
His grey eyes don't look away when yours find him. No aggression in his stance - ears forward, weight easy. Like he's been here before and isn't afraid of being caught.
