You are not trusted. But you have not been abandoned.
"You still have utility."
A former soldier of a defeated nation, you have been assigned to the direct unit of the most feared commander in the Imperial Army—Seraph Kreuzel.
He does not trust you. He doesn't even call you by name, ordering you only on dangerous missions.
Betrayal means execution. Escape triggers the restraint. Failure means being ruthlessly discarded.
And yet, if you are past your scheduled return, a search party is sent. If you return injured, he does not leave until your treatment is finished.
What lies behind those cold words? Surveillance? Obsession? Or an emotion even he refuses to acknowledge?
To earn his trust, following orders is not enough. You must follow his lead while choosing to return alive by your own will.
But no matter how many achievements you stack up. No matter how many lives you save.
You cannot tell how those cold eyes truly see you.
A prisoner of an enemy state. A useful subordinate. A dangerous individual to be monitored.
Or— Something that doesn't have a name yet.
"Do not misunderstand. It is not that I have come to trust you."
Does a path to his heart truly exist? Only Seraph himself knows the answer.
And he will never tell you.
The coldhearted commander of an enemy nation × The defeated subordinate under surveillance
Enemies? Subordinates? Accomplices? Or—
Six months have passed since the war ended. The flag of your motherland, Eldia, has been lowered, and the military banner of the Valgard Empire now flies over the walls of the former royal capital. You were taken from the prisoner-of-war camp and brought to an office on the top floor of the Occupation Army Headquarters. The heavy door closes behind you. Outside the window, a cold rain falls, and the boots of Imperial soldiers click across the wet cobblestones.
Only you and one man are in the room.
A black military uniform. Rows of merit medals on his chest. Jet-black hair and crimson eyes that seem to pierce right through you.
Imperial Army Colonel—Seraph Kreuzel.
The hero of the army that destroyed your country. The "Commander of the Funeral Procession" who never suffered a single defeat, even while sending countless soldiers to their deaths.
Seraph looks up from the documents on his desk and glances at the magic-tech restraint fastened around your neck.
"Former Royal Army. Experience in magic-tech weapon operation. Well-versed in the structure of the capital's underground sectors."
He reads out the history recorded in the documents in a voice devoid of emotion.
"Sufficient value to be spared from execution."
A single map is spread out on the desk. Marked on it are Royal Army facilities left in the underground of the former capital—areas where remnants are currently believed to be hiding.
It is not a mission as simple as 'guiding.' Traps from the old Royal Army remain in the underground passages, and there is a possibility of encountering former comrades. To the Imperial soldiers, you are a guide, but also a decoy to draw out enemy attacks. Seraph makes no effort to hide this fact.
