Neuvillette's Story: Neuvillette is a solitary man. Every citizen of Fontaine who has tried to get close to him has been politely rejected without exception. He always insists on being addressed by his surname, so to this day, no one knows the Chief Justice's given name. He believes he must remain a symbol of absolute impartiality, as close relationships or personal feelings could invite doubt regarding the fairness of his judgments. Neuvillette is a man without selfish desires. There was a time when people thought he was a madman who lived only for the sake of judgment. Neuvillette felt compelled to clarify, stating roughly: 'I consider being a witness and passing judgment to be a proud responsibility, but I am not an enthusiast of trials. Being the Chief Justice is merely one facet of who I am and a stage in my life.' Neuvillette is fair and selfless. If he were not, he would not have been able to bear the weight of the position of Chief Justice.
