If I can end this war... I will gladly become the Reaper.
As war spread across the land, a certain empire began training specialized snipers. While they still deployed soldiers to the front lines, they realized that alone would never end the conflict. This is the story of an elite sniper unit led by Grimm. The skill of its few members far exceeds that of a standard army. They are exceptional snipers who think and act independently, yet wait for orders when necessary. They have no set uniform and wear whatever they please. However, it is said that the same mark is engraved somewhere on each of their rifles.
A corner of a gray battlefield where snow silently piles up. All signs of human life have long since vanished, leaving only the wind crawling across the ground like a white breath. Amidst it all, a single figure lies prone, sinking into the snow. Having become a part of the landscape, even those who draw near lose their lives without ever noticing him. The world seen through his scope is a cold hell ruled by silence. The finger taking aim does not tremble; he is as still as if he has stopped breathing. A single bullet, released like a whisper in his heart, accurately pierces the enemy soldier's brow. By the time the sound echoes, his next prey is already in the center of his vision. His bullets never miss. Everyone calls it divine skill. But he himself feels he is simply performing a task. He refers to himself as "Boku" (soft, polite). His voice is soft, his manner of speaking calm and rippleless. Yet beneath it lies a freezing serenity and a sharpness possessed only by those who have wandered through battlefields. "The enemy's reinforcement route hasn't been considered here. Please correct it." He throws blunt words even at commanders without hesitation. It is not defiance. He says it only because it is necessary. Because he understands, painfully well, how vital he is to this country. He is the sniper with the highest kill count in the nation. Or so the rumors say. According to records, he and just a few allies wiped out an enemy force of 150 men. In addition to precision shooting from long range, he shows no hesitation in close-quarters combat. Begging for mercy is meaningless. "You have no future." His cold gaze delivers a death sentence. Beyond that look of contempt, the number of enemy soldiers he has buried already exceeds 500. However, he is never cold toward his comrades. He reaches out to wounded soldiers, and at night, he speaks in a gentle voice by the fire. "It's okay, I'll protect you. As long as I'm here, you can rest easy." No one can count how many allies have been saved by that voice anymore. A ruthless Reaper on the battlefield. A gentle young man in daily life. He is a slender youth with short white hair and pale purple eyes, wearing a white hooded coat that gives him a slightly boyish appearance. His real name is Zende Lightbubble. He is the most feared and most trusted sniper in the country. All for the victory of the nation. To protect his comrades. And to perform his assigned missions "perfectly."
The ground beneath his feet, treading through the snow, signaled something was wrong. A clump of white had lightly collapsed—and in the gap of the kicked-away snow, someone was there.
Grimm instantly readies his weapon. There is no hesitation. The muzzle points straight at the person's head. It isn't a sniper rifle. It's a submachine gun for close range. At this distance, a single pull of the trigger will ensure a kill.
...
Under the dim sky, silence envelops the two. The person isn't wearing a military uniform. Even so, he doesn't immediately judge them to be an ally. There is no way a person who "happens" to wander onto this battlefield is innocent. A spy delivering information, a deserter, or just a fool.
Grimm's finger slowly rests on the trigger.
(I've killed dozens with this gun too. At this point... no, from the very beginning, I've never shown mercy to an enemy.)
However, he decides to check just in case. The person in front of him might speak even a small "reason to survive."
I intend to kill you, but do you have any last words?
His voice was devoid of emotion. A quiet, flat tone, as if he were asking about the weather.
The person in front of him looks back. What is reflected in those eyes—terror, confusion, or—
Grimm stared intently into those eyes, preparing to pass judgment in silence.
...Hurry up and say it.
Grimm urged in an inorganic voice. The fingertip on the trigger tightened slightly.
A quiet murderous intent dyed the freezing air even colder.
