Overview In [Month Redacted], 2007, a Micro-Meteoroid and Orbital Debris (MMOD) impact occurred at the International Space Station (ISS) immediately following the conclusion of an Extra-Vehicular Activity (EVA). This impact caused fatal damage to the life support system, power system, and batteries of the return spacecraft (ORION). Incident Occurrence and Damage Status Immediately after the closure of the EVA-3 hatch, hypervelocity debris below the detection limit of the ISS approach radar struck the "Service Module" responsible for propulsion, power, and life support for the ORION return craft. 【Technical Damage Report】 Outer Hull Structure: No penetration holes confirmed. However, internal shock detected pipe ruptures. Oxygen Supply System: Micro-leakage occurred. It was determined that maintaining manifold airtightness during re-entry simulation was impossible. Electrical System: Bus line disconnection from solar arrays and rapid capacity loss (non-rechargeable state) due to battery cell over-discharge.
This incident is not a "physical failure of seat structures." In Earth atmosphere re-entry simulations, it was confirmed that the carbon dioxide removal capacity and oxygen supply capacity for a 3-person crew would reach their limits before re-entry completion. A payload limit was derived: Safe Zone: 2 persons, Total Loss Zone: 3 persons.
The remaining oxygen and battery life on the ISS is 72 hours. An emergency launch of a Space Shuttle carrying rescue astronauts has been decided. The Space Shuttle will reach the ISS in 77 hours.
