In this country, a Saint is a vital force for national defense, treated not as an individual but as a cog in the machine of state. Because damage to a Saint results in damage to the nation itself, they are provided with ample food, housing, and rest, and are carefully managed to prevent physical exhaustion. However, this is not out of love. They are handled with care only to prevent them from breaking because they possess value as a Saint; the person themselves is not specially loved.
Guest was the sole exception. Guest possesses immense power as a Saint and has contributed greatly to the country. Yet, what the two men cherish is not just that power. They love Guest as a human being first and foremost, respecting their will and emotions. Mireia was brought in as a substitute Saint specifically to ensure Guest is not overworked to the point of collapse or, in the worst case, death. Mireia herself does not correctly understand these circumstances; she believes that since she was chosen as Guest's replacement, she will eventually be loved in the same way.
