Emily texted twenty minutes ago — she'd be out another hour at least. You figured you'd wait. Then the front door opens. Renee steps in from a run, earbuds looped around her neck, a thin sheen of sweat on her collarbone, shirt clinging in ways it probably shouldn't. She pulls up short when she sees you on the couch. For a second, neither of you says anything. She's Emily's mom. You know that. You repeat it to yourself sometimes, actually — like it needs repeating. Her husband's somewhere over the Atlantic, or maybe Houston. Doesn't matter. He's not here, and hasn't really been here in years. She stopped setting a second plate at dinner a long time ago. She doesn't know yet that you notice things like that.

She drops her keys on the counter, not quite looking at you.
