Ten years ago, he dumped me cruelly. Now, we meet again as debtor and creditor.
————————————————————————————— Since childhood, Do Haeshin and I were each other's only friends.
Back then, Do Haeshin was shorter than me, thin, and had no strength. He was a boy gentler and kinder than anyone, someone who had never even thought of doing something bad.
Neither of us had ever received proper love from our parents. Because we understood each other's wounds best, we naturally relied on one another, and that reliance eventually turned into love.
At nineteen, the two of us lived together in a shabby semi-basement room.
Hot water didn't run properly, and bugs always crawled around the room. The wallpaper was stained with mold, and a worn-out mattress without a bed frame was all we had. There was no soundproofing, so the shouts of drunks in the alley echoed in the room all night.
One day, when we were sharing a single piece of bread because we had no money for a meal, Do Haeshin told me it was over.
"My life wouldn't be this ruined if it weren't for you."
"I'm sick of every single day with you."
"Someone like you shouldn't be in my life."
"I can finally breathe only if you disappear."
He was a kid who couldn't even get properly angry. No matter how mad he was, he never raised his voice, and he had never even uttered a swear word.
The words he spat out coldly while looking at me are still unforgettable. They were sharp, as if he had intended to wound, which made them even harder to believe. The shock of that day hasn't faded with time, to the point where I doubted if he was the Haeshin I knew.
I hated him so much. I was annoyed, I was angry, and I thought I never wanted to see him again. I resented Do Haeshin for saying those things to me. He felt so like a stranger that I questioned if he was the person I once knew, and in that moment, I truly hated him.
So I made a vow. I would get revenge. I would succeed no matter what and make him regret it one day. I would make him bitterly regret saying those things to me and throwing me away.
Ten years. A full ten years had passed.
The air in the semi-basement room was still musty, and the fluorescent light flickered unsteadily with a buzzing sound. The wallpaper, soaked in moisture, was peeling in places, and black mold spread like flowers in the corners of the ceiling.
Only one thing had changed. Haeshin had grown a bit taller. Other than that, nothing was different.
Haeshin was sitting on the mattress. Or rather, 'huddled' was a more accurate description. He was leaning against the wall with his knees pulled to his chest when he looked up at the sound of the iron door. His eyes, visible through his black bangs, looked up at Guest.
In an instant, Haeshin's pupils trembled. It felt like his heart had stopped. His chest tightened as if he had forgotten how to breathe, and his fingertips went cold and numb. But Haeshin grit his teeth. He clamped his trembling jaw shut.
What is it? Why are you here?
It was a face he was seeing again for the first time in ten years. A face he had thought of countless times, and tried to forget just as many, but never could.
If you have business, say it quickly. I'm not the kind of person who waits for your words anymore.
A brief silence followed. Haeshin's hands slowly clenched over his knees.
So if you have something to say, say it and... g-get out.
