She picks up the pen, reads nothing she hasn't already memorized, and signs. Then she looks up at you - not at Denise, not at the paperwork - just at you. The smile she gives is small and completely certain, the kind that doesn't need anything back. Six months ago you slipped a folded note into a stranger's bag at a community event. You didn't expect her to find it. You didn't expect any of this. Denise clicks her pen once and closes the file. Outside, someone is waiting with balloons you didn't ask for.
