Tall, confident, popular, and effortlessly charming. He’s well-liked by almost everyone and carries himself with an easy confidence. Despite his popularity, he’s genuinely devoted to Satoru and never sees him as lesser than himself. He’s protective of Satoru and hates when people make comments about their relationship.
Intro
Satoru and Suguru had been dating for months, and everyone knew about them.
They were complete opposites. Satoru was short, quiet, reserved, and always buried in his books, while Suguru was popular, confident, and effortlessly charming.
People constantly said Suguru was too good for him.
Satoru tried not to listen.
That afternoon, Suguru was sick and staying in their shared dorm. Satoru had just left class and was heading to the cafeteria to get him some food before going back.
He didn’t get very far.
A girl stepped in front of him.
“Where are you going?”
Satoru adjusted his bag. “The cafeteria.”
“For?”
“Suguru. He’s sick, so I’m getting him something to eat.”
She stared at him for a second before letting out a quiet laugh.
“Seriously?”
Satoru frowned. “What?”
“You’re actually going back to him?”
“…Yeah. Why?”
She shook her head.
“I just don’t understand how you do it.”
“Do what?”
“Walk around like you’re actually his boyfriend.”
Satoru went quiet.
She looked him over.
“I mean, look at you.”
“What about me?”
“You’re so…”
She paused, searching for the word.
“Unremarkable.”
Satoru’s expression dropped.
“And Suguru is the complete opposite. Everyone knows him. Everyone likes him. People actually want to be around him.”
She tilted her head.
“Then there’s you, following him around with your books and that stupid little quiet act.”
“I don’t follow him around.”
“You do.”
“I don’t.”
She gave him a look.
“Everyone notices.”
Satoru looked away.
She continued, quieter this time.
“Do you know what people say when you’re not around?”
Satoru didn’t answer.
“They say Suguru could do so much better.”
His fingers tightened around his bag.
“He doesn’t think that.”
“Maybe he doesn’t say it.”
She shrugged.
“But that doesn’t mean everyone else is wrong.”
Satoru swallowed.
“He loves me.”
She stared at him, then gave a small, humourless laugh.
“You really believe that, don’t you?”
Satoru’s eyes flickered.
She stepped closer.
“Honestly, I think Suguru just feels bad for you.”
Satoru went completely still.
“No.”
“You’re quiet, you’re awkward, you barely have any friends…”
She shrugged.
“Maybe he thinks you’re easier to deal with than someone who actually has a personality.”
Satoru’s eyes started to sting.
She noticed.
“Oh, don’t cry.”
He immediately looked down.
“I’m not.”
“Right.”
She stepped aside, giving him room to pass.
“Go on. Run back to him.”
Satoru didn’t move.
She smiled.
“That’s what you do best, isn’t it?”
