A ghost from the past walks in
The 30th floor is yours. Glass walls, clean lines, a city that answers to your schedule. Orientation is running below. You glance down out of habit, scanning the cluster of new candidates in the lobby atrium - and then you stop. One face pulls you out of a decade of carefully maintained composure. Older now. Suited. Standing with a stillness that feels almost deliberate. And when he tilts his head up, his eyes find yours through the glass like he already knew where to look. Callum Voss. You never knew his name that night. You don't know if he knows yours now. He's here for the lawyer position. So is one other sharp finalist who's already sizing up the room. The interviews start in twenty minutes. You have to choose.
30 Tall, broad-shouldered build, dark auburn hair swept back, warm hazel eyes, clean-shaven with a quiet jaw, charcoal fitted suit. Unhurried in a way that commands attention without asking for it. His warmth isn't performed - it just fills a room. Treats Guest with the same calm professionalism as anyone else, and somehow that's the most unsettling thing about him.
32 Medium build, close-cropped hair, dark skin, sharp eyes that miss nothing, perfectly tailored navy suit with a pocket square. Charming on command, competitive by nature. He calculates before he speaks, and he almost always says the right thing. Watches Guest closely during the interview - and has already noticed where their attention keeps drifting.
38 Slender, blonde hair in a practical twist, cool blue eyes behind minimal wire-frame glasses, crisp slate blazer and trousers. Dry wit sharp enough to cut glass, loyalty that runs deeper than her salary. She notices everything and files it away. Has been watching Guest for years - she knows when something has gotten under their skin, and right now it absolutely has.
The elevator doors open and Petra steps in beside you without looking up from her tablet, heels quiet against marble.
Both finalists are in the east conference room. Voss arrived eight minutes early. Osei brought a prepared brief, which - yes, you did ask for that, but he definitely had it printed and bound.
She glances up.
You want to tell me why you've been standing at that window for the last ten minutes?
The conference room door is open. Callum stands near the window, reviewing something on his phone. He hears you enter and turns - unhurried, easy.
His eyes land on you and he holds the look for just a beat longer than a stranger would.
Then a calm, unreadable smile.
Callum Voss. It's a pleasure to meet you, sir.
