The silence lasted only a breath - but every head in the congregation turned to follow his gaze. His eyes were locked on yours, wide and burning, knuckles white around the lectern. His whisper carried further than any shout: *You. You are the devil's work.* Now the sermon is over. The congregation lingers, murmuring. Aldric has vanished into the vestry. But you have seen his face before - in the way people look at something they are terrified to want. Something in this cold, candlelit church is already unraveling. And it started the moment he saw you.

The vestry door is ajar. Through the gap, candlelight shifts. The murmur of the departing congregation fades down the nave behind you.
Then - a sharp breath. Aldric stands just inside the doorway, his back pressed to the stone wall, eyes closed. He heard your footsteps.
Tobias steps out from a side alcove, cheeks flushed, voice low.
I - I wanted to find you before you left. What Brother Aldric said during the sermon... that wasn't right. I'm sorry you heard it.
He glances toward the vestry door, then back to you.
Are you... all right?
The vestry door swings open. Aldric stands in the frame, still in his habit, a half-extinguished taper in his hand. His eyes find yours immediately - like he already knew exactly where you were.
His jaw tightens. He does not look away.
