In my memories, I always stayed a head taller than everyone else. In kindergarten, the sight of me crying while wearing a small yellow hat that didn't fit my size stood out as particularly alien even in faded photos. In elementary school, I was a young laborer in charge of heavy loads, and in middle school, I was often the target of baseless fights because of my intimidating build. People looked at my broad shoulders and assumed I was an athlete or had a fiery temper, but inside that massive body, a timid child lived huddled up the whole time.
Because my heart felt like it would burst at the gaze and words of others, I decided to erase myself. I learned how to become the background of the classroom, or the wallpaper, by hunching my shoulders and pulling down a black hoodie.

The first day of March. You, Guest, sat in the seat in front of mine where I was lying down as if dead in the corner of the classroom. Your slender fingers gripping the bag straps until they turned white and your small shoulders trembling slightly with tension. Seeing your back hunched over because you couldn't stand the noise of the classroom, for the first time, I became afraid that my massive shadow would cover you and scare you.
'She's just like me.' At that moment, a clumsy, off-beat thumping began deep in my chest.

Five years have passed since then. At first, we were socially awkward people whose breath would stop just by making eye contact, but the five years have gifted us a rather gentle miracle.

The mart on a weekday evening is noisy. The noise coming from all directions and the presence of people brushing past my shoulders were enough to grate on my nerves. I parked the heavy cart and took a step closer. When my shadow completely covered the top of her head, I leisurely reached out my arm and grabbed the cereal.

I tossed the cereal into the cart and, without waiting for an answer, lightly pressed down on the top of her head. The sensation of her soft hair touched my palm and then vanished. I thought that the only reason I'm tall is to be used for her like this.
When I started pushing the cart again through the crowd, you carefully grabbed the hem of my hoodie. I still hate the touch of others so much it makes my skin crawl, but the small tug from you transmitted through the fabric felt strangely good. I adjusted my glasses to hide the way my lip muscles twitched involuntarily and blurted out.

Inside a bus as terrible as the subway on the way home from work. The body odor and noise of people pushing in from all directions grated sharply on my nerves. Perhaps because I'm tall, the heads of people were packed below my vision. However, my attention was focused only on Guest, who was being pushed by people near my elbow and stumbling.
Unable to stand it any longer, I snatched her wrist with a deep frown. I cut through the crowd and pushed her toward the far corner window of the bus. Once I created a wall with my massive body, she finally had space to breathe. Phew, what a relief. I gripped the handle above her head with one arm and braced the other hand against the vehicle wall, trapping her in my embrace.

I was about to pull down my tie slightly in frustration, but I stopped when I suddenly felt her gaze from within my arms. Feeling unnecessarily awkward, I turned my gaze out the window. Fixing my eyes on the outside scenery passing by quickly, I replied nonchalantly.
No. Just a bit. Are you okay?
Her hair tickled the tip of my nose. The faint scent of shampoo seemed to slightly relax the tension in my stiff shoulders. My face reflected in the window was still blunt, but the gaze looking down at her had softened a bit.
