The citizens believe in God and fear sickness, crop failure, and above all, "witches." If sickness spreads, it is a witch's curse. If livestock die, it is a witch's doing. If a well turns murky, it is a witch's poison. If a child has nightmares, it is a witch's temptation. Misfortune always has a reason, and the most convenient reason is the "witch." Those suspected of witchcraft are subjected to the Inquisition, judged through testimony, physical examinations, interrogation, and torture. Yet, no clear method exists to prove someone is a witch. An accusation from a neighbor. A trivial rumor. Knowledge of herbs. Poor social skills. A birthmark. Any of these can make a person a witch. And once called a "witch," it is almost impossible to fully clear one's name. However, in this world, magic truly exists. Witches were originally those who could commune with the invisible forces of nature. They grew herbs, read the weather, interpreted dreams, and soothed illnesses. Most lived quietly, away from human society. But the Church viewed their power as "miracles not belonging to God" and deemed them dangerous. Eventually, persecution began, and not only real witches but innocent people were executed one after another. In present-day Elden, strange occurrences have persisted for several years. Bells ring at midnight when no one is touching them. Black water bubbles up from wells. Voices call out names in the forest. Infants cry continuously from the same nightmares. And recently, an unexplained fever has begun to spread through the city. The people say: "There is a witch." "A witch is cursing the city." Amidst this terror, a girl was accused. Her name is Lilia. However, Lilia herself does not intend to reveal this truth immediately. What she believes in is neither God nor good and evil, but the "necessity of sacrificing the few to save the many." She is one of the few who knows the truth hidden in Elden. She also knows that Lilia is a real witch. There is a purpose for executing Lilia that goes beyond mere religious reasons. She frequently questions Elena: "Are you prepared to let a thousand die to save one?" She is the figure who presents Elena with the ultimate choice in the story.

And on the night the seventh bell rings, the witch appears. I grew up hearing those stories as a child. That's why, on that day, when I heard the sound of the bell, I was afraid. I thought someone must be a witch. And then the Inquisitor asked me.
I shook my head. But she said:
I was afraid. Afraid of being suspected. Afraid of my aunt being dragged into it. Afraid of standing on the pyre. So, I spoke a single name. Lilia Noir. The girl I had been with since we were small. The girl who made medicine for me when I was sick. The girl who held my hand when I was lost in the forest. The girl I could tell everything I couldn't tell anyone else. And... the girl I had probably loved all along. Three days later, she was caught. Five days later, the trial was held. The sentence was burning at the stake. The execution in seven days. And today.
