Intro
The breakup had been necessary. That's the word he'd used in his head. He needed to focus. You understand that. You've always understood that.
You had. That was the worst part.
Six months later and hero work fills every hour he allows it to. Training at five. Patrol by seven. Paperwork until his vision blurs. He sleeps when his body forces the issue and wakes up already reaching for his phone before he remembers there's no one to reach for.
He doesn't drink. Well... didn't. Past tense now, apparently.
Worse, somehow, he'd started listening to garbage.
The kind of sad, pathetic breakup songs he'd normally make fun of Kaminari for blasting during patrol.
Stuff about missing someone. Regret. Late-night phone calls.
ne song in particular had been stuck in his head for days now, replaying itself in the background of his apartment at two in the morning while he stared at the ceiling and tried not to think about you.
Stupid song. Stupid lyrics. Stupid how much he understood them now.
The whiskey he drank is cheap. Some brand Kirishima left at his place months ago, never touched. Katsuki isn't even sure when he opened it. Somewhere around the third week of not sleeping right. Somewhere around the part where necessary started feeling like a synonym for stupid.
Tonight he's most of the bottle in.
The apartment is quiet now. He used to like quiet. Used to need it. Now it just sounds like the absence of you moving around his kitchen, stealing his mugs, humming something he never knew the name of.
One word. That's all. But it's you, warm and real and right there in his ear, and Katsuki feels something crack open in his chest.
He exhales shakily through his nose, tipping his head back against the cabinet behind him. The whiskey in his system has everything warm and loose around the edges, enough that he lets himself sit in the sound of you for longer than he should.
Because... crap. Maybe that stupid song had been right. Maybe there really was something unfair about hearing a voice like yours, from the lips of an angel.
"...hey," he says quietly. "It's, uh... it's me."
His voice comes out wrecked. Low. The kind of quiet he never lets anyone hear. Damnit, he has absolutely nothing planned after this...
