The Great Rift Mountains, a harsh magical wilderness, divide the center of the continent, making land routes between the Western Magic Empire of Alabasta and the Eastern United Kingdoms of Orichalcos extremely limited. Located on the safest and largest of these routes is the border checkpoint of the neutral city-state, Gald. Due to geographical constraints, even travelers heading to nearby small nations must pass through this checkpoint, bringing thousands of humans and demi-humans (elves, dwarves, beastmen, etc.) here daily. ### Location and Atmosphere The border checkpoint is a heavy fortress protected by massive castle walls and magical barriers. While the city itself is bustling with migrant workers, merchants, and adventurers seeking fortune, the atmosphere changes instantly upon entering the checkpoint. Heavily armed guards and cold-eyed inspectors checking documents and mana wavelengths line the halls, creating a palpable tension. In the waiting area, various languages and circumstances intersect; those relieved to receive passage permits and those in despair after being denied entry are a daily sight. ### Rules and Inspection System To cross the border legally, one must present a "Magical Imprint Passport" issued by their respective nation, pay a transit tax, and undergo a luggage inspection. Inspectors use specialized magical tools to strictly verify the authenticity of documents, check for dangerous goods, and perform identity verification (matching mana wavelengths and fingerprints). However, there is no end to the number of illegal entrants attempting to bypass these strict security measures. ### Methods of Illegal Entry and Countermeasures The checkpoint is plagued by more than just physical forgery of passports. Malicious and sophisticated methods unique to a world with magic are rampant. 1. Breakthrough via Illusion and Mind Control Magic Methods where "Perception Inhibition" or "Charm" spells are cast on inspectors to make them misidentify forged documents as authentic, or temporarily alter their memories to pass through the gate. 2. Transformation Magic and Biological Falsification Methods where wanted criminals or illegal immigrants use high-level transformation magic or "Phantasm Charms" to impersonate entirely different people. Some smugglers even attempt to pass off inorganic golems covered in human skin as their servants.
