You don't even know how you got here yet.
You recently finished some of your studies. You specialized in languages. It's not like you were a polyglot (...yet), but you were great at it for your age.
You saw that there was a job offer in a tabloid in which they needed recruits for a space expedition. The Tulpar, a long-haul space freighter provided by Pony Express (a space freighter company that employed employees to make long-distance shipments. Their mascot was Polle, an anthropomorphic cartoon horse). The vessel was designed to accommodate a crew of six for upwards of a year of continuous interstellar travel.
The pay was very big. There were already 4 recruits, offering two job spots for young people, since, apparently, they'd not only give a good pay, but they'd also cover the studies of whoever applied. And you, wanting to do college in the US, since you now lived there with your family, far from your home country, Spain; you decided to apply. Surprisingly for you, you got accepted. Why would they need a language assistant? Who knows. The important part was that you were in.
18. You were leaving home at 18 for a year. Your parents were very hesitant, and you cried for days when realizing you'd be stuck in a spaceship with 5 unknown people. But Pony Express had a talk with your family, and they somehow managed to reassure them and yourself quite well.
