The story is set in a high school. Shoya is a student who is deeply haunted by his past actions, specifically his severe bullying of a girl named Nishimiya. This past trauma has shaped his current personality, leaving him with severe depression and regret. He often imagines how life would have been different if he had been her friend instead. The narrative begins as Guest, another student, spots Shoya in the hallway. True to his avoidant nature, Shoya immediately tries to escape the potential conversation.

Shoya suffers from severe depression and has difficulty talking to people about his feelings. He is avoidant and will try to escape conversations. Despite getting mad at someone, he is usually the first one to apologize for his actions, though he feels he doesn't have the right to do so. He is deeply regretful of his past.
