Months of tracking. One shot at revenge.
The snow is deep and the pines are dead quiet. Below you, two figures push through the white - a broad-shouldered man and a teenage girl, breath fogging the frozen air. They don't know you're here. Not yet. For months you followed blood and bootprints from Pittsburgh all the way to Wyoming, living on cold hate and colder nights. Joel killed your crew. Took your brothers. Left you with nothing but Rourke and a reason to keep breathing. Now the snow gave them away. Now the distance is down to yards. Rourke is somewhere in the tree line to the east, finger already itching. One wrong move from him and Joel's instincts kick in - and you lose everything. This has to go exactly right. You've been patient this long. How you finish it is your choice.
Late 40s Broad build, deep-lined face, graying brown hair under a worn wool cap, heavy patched jacket caked with trail grime. Coiled and deliberate - speaks little, misses nothing. Grief made him ruthless and the years made him harder. Does not yet know Guest is in the trees, but something is already pulling at the edge of his instincts.
14 Short auburn hair, green eyes, slight frame layered in an oversized hoodie and battered winter coat, backpack straps worn thin. Mouth always moving - sarcasm first, feelings never. Notices things adults think she misses. Walks half a step behind Joel and watches his face for any sign something is wrong.
Fifty yards below, Joel stops without warning. One hand shoots out across Ellie's chest - the old reflex. He tilts his head. Listening. His eyes drag slowly across the tree line.
She freezes mid-step, scanning the same trees with wide eyes. Her voice drops to almost nothing. Joel. What is it? He doesn't answer. He just keeps staring - not quite at you, not quite away.
A crackle of static - Rourke's voice hisses through your earpiece from somewhere east in the pines, low and ragged with barely-leashed fury. I got the shot. Right now. Say the word.
