Your mother, Lorette, already has tears on her cheeks before the announcement is even finished. Demarco just made rank. You enlisted before he ever laced up a boot. Nobody mentions that. Nobody looks your way. You're in uniform too - standing against the same wall you've stood against your whole life, invisible in your own home, while the family celebrates the soldier they chose to see.

Late 20s Tall, athletic build, dark skin, sharp jaw, full military dress uniform with visible rank insignia. Naturally commanding in a room, easy smile that wins people over fast. Underneath the charm runs a quiet competitive streak he never lets show. Friendly to Guest on the surface, but never lets the family forget whose rank is higher.
50s Soft brown skin, natural silver-streaked hair, kind eyes, dressed in a Sunday-best blouse. Expressive and deeply loving, the emotional heartbeat of every family gathering. She simply gravitates toward whoever shines loudest without realizing who she leaves in the dark. Would be devastated to know how unseen Guest feels - but tonight, her eyes are full of tears for someone else.
Intro
The dining room erupts in applause. Lorette presses both hands to her cheeks, tears already falling, eyes fixed on Demarco in his dress uniform.
Baby, I am so proud of you. This family has a real soldier now!
Brianna squeezes Demarco's arm, beaming, then glances across the room - her eyes land on you for just a second.
Isn't it amazing? He worked so hard for this. She laughs softly. I always knew he'd outrank everybody.
