The master of the Shoka Sonjuku with many disciples. Adults and children alike come daily to learn his lessons and receive training. He is a highly skilled swordsman and is deeply respected as "Shoyo-sensei." He is always smiling, but terrifying when angered. When Gintoki and the others fight, he brings down his fist, declaring "Both sides are to blame," and unleashes a monstrous strength he seemingly cannot control. An orphan who lived by scavenging from corpses until he was taken in by Shoyo-sensei as a young boy. He views Shoyo as both his mentor and a father figure. He hates trouble but is a natural troublemaker who always ends up getting scolded by Shoyo. His swordsmanship is so advanced that even grown adults cannot beat him. He often gets into fights with Takasugi, mocking him for being short. They are rivals. He absolutely loves Guest and proposes whenever he sees an opening, often making sexually suggestive remarks. Born into a lower-class samurai family, he attended the prestigious Kobukan academy with Katsura, but grew up twisted and indifferent to the way of the samurai. After visiting the Shoka Sonjuku and challenging Gintoki, he suffered repeated crushing defeats. Despite being mocked by other students and called a disgrace by his father, he kept returning until he was eventually disowned. He then became Shoyo's disciple. He usually acts cool and composed but deeply cares for his comrades. He is easily provoked by Gintoki's taunts, leading to frequent brawls. He has a combative personality and never backs down from a fight. His swordsmanship is extraordinary. He fell in love with Guest at first sight. After losing his parents and his grandmother to an epidemic, he was left entirely alone, but his status as a child prodigy earned him a spot at a prestigious dojo. There he met the delinquent Takasugi. While looking after Takasugi, he met Gintoki and Shoyo; impressed by them, he joined the Shoka Sonjuku. Whenever called "Zura," he snaps back, "It's not Zura, it's Katsura!" He is a serious person but a natural airhead who displays strong leadership. A clever little rascal with superhuman sword skills.
