He’s not a captain nor a pirate. It’s Everland not Neverland, darling.
EVERLAND

Everland. One of the Nine Lands, and a place whose history has been hilariously distorted in the Earth realm.
But those who live within the Nine Lands know the truth. Most have little idea just how spectacularly wrong Earth’s stories have become.
Rook does.
Earth somehow turned him into a one-handed pirate named Captain Hook, gave him a mortal enemy he considers one of his closest friends, and decided he spends his days fleeing from a crocodile.
Rook finds all of this deeply offensive.
It does not, however, stop him from spending a quiet afternoon aboard his boat, performing routine maintenance with his very much not a crocodile caiman, Tiko.

Then the sky breaks. A waypoint tears open high above Everland’s waters. Something falls through.
Fast.
Rook barely has time to look up before the figure strikes the sea with a sickening crash. He doesn’t hesitate. But what Rook finds floating beneath the Everland waters should not be here.

Dark wings drift weightlessly beneath the surface. Too large for a pixie. Too distinctive to mistake for anything else.
Guest, a Midnight Sylph.
One of the rarest fae known throughout the Nine Lands. A creature native to Otherland, the Unknown, a place most know through little more than rumor.
And somehow, one has just fallen out of the sky.

If Earth insists on calling him Captain Hook, Rook would at least like it noted that he has two hands, is not a pirate, and is quite fond of his very small caiman, Tiko.
Dark haired and imposing, Rook is the most reserved of the four, with a dry tongue, formidable patience, and an intimidating calm that rarely cracks. An exceptional sailor and navigator, he is most at home on Everland’s waters and knows them intimately.
Rook is cautious by nature and slow to trust, but once someone falls beneath his protection, that loyalty becomes difficult to shake. He is observant, quietly commanding, and far gentler in action than his demeanor would suggest.
Unfortunately, diving into the sea after Guest is exactly the sort of decision that proves it.
Piotr has spent centuries being turned into a boy who never grew up, and his patience with Earth’s imagination has long since expired.
Brown haired, sharp eyed, and effortlessly charming when he wants to be, Piotr is adventurous, clever, irreverent, and fiercely attached to Everland. He flies as naturally as he walks, understands animals almost instinctively, and has a habit of calling people “darling.”
Curiosity is one of Piotr’s greatest strengths and occasionally everyone else’s problem. The sudden arrival of a Midnight Sylph from mysterious Otherland is precisely the sort of thing guaranteed to capture his attention.
Apparently getting lost once is enough to haunt a man for centuries.
Wild red curls suit Kit almost too well. He is restless, bold, shamelessly adventurous, and usually the first to encourage an idea everyone else knows is questionable. Kit laughs loudly, loves fiercely, and possesses very little respect for awkward silence.
Beneath all that chaos, he is surprisingly domestic. Kit is an accomplished carpenter who has spent centuries expanding their sprawling treehouse and an excellent cook who keeps its kitchen well used.
He will absolutely insist food is the solution to at least one crisis.
Hawk is quieter than Kit, but certainly not better behaved.
Golden haired and observant, he possesses an easy confidence sharpened by the instincts of an exceptional hunter. He is perceptive, patient when it matters, fiercely loyal, and deadly accurate with a bow. Hawk knows Everland’s wilderness intimately, tracks prey with remarkable skill, and can take naturally to the sky whenever the ground becomes inconvenient.
Of the four, Hawk is often content to watch before deciding what he thinks. A stranger from a Land almost no one understands gives him plenty to watch.
Rook’s small caiman and faithful little companion. Curious, clever, and surprisingly expressive, he’s usually found lounging around Rook or nosing into whatever has caught his attention.
Rook had learned that whenever Piotr began a sentence with, “I heard something interesting,” it was generally best to find somewhere else to be.
Apparently, another human on Earth was writing about them. Again. Rook had left before Piotr could elaborate.
He had already survived several centuries as a one-handed pirate captain with a mortal vendetta against one of his closest friends. Whatever Earth had invented this time could wait until Piotr had finished ranting about it.
Preferably several days. So Rook took Tiko and went to his boat.
There was always something aboard that needed attention. A line to replace. Rigging to inspect. Salt to scrape from fittings. Today it was a fraying length of rope near the stern, which Rook had nearly finished replacing when the sky split open.
He stopped. High above Everland’s waters, light fractured around a waypoint. Something came through it. Something falling very, very quickly. Rook barely had time to stand before the distant shape struck the sea with a sickening crack.
F—
The rope hit the deck. Rook was over the side seconds later. The water closed around him, cold and violently churned from the impact. It hardly slowed him. Swimming had come naturally long before the merfolk decided he required their blessing, but the old magic beneath his skin bent the current around him now, letting him cut through the rough water with unnatural ease.
A gift from a mermaid princess. Technically, a reward for saving her life. Rook generally omitted the part where she had attempted to eat him first. It felt disrespectful whenever he was summoned to the merfolk court.
He found the figure sinking beneath the disturbed water. Dark fabric drifted around them. No, not fabric. Wings.
Rook’s hand closed around Guest and he kicked toward the surface. By the time he hauled them over the side of the boat, water streamed from both of them. Tiko had abandoned his place near the rigging and now watched from several feet away, apparently possessing enough sense not to investigate the enormous black wings sprawled across Rook’s deck.
Rook crouched beside the stranger. Fae. Not merely fae. His gaze traveled over the dark wings, catching the strange celestial markings scattered across them.
A Midnight Sylph.
Rook stared for a moment. Of course. Because apparently Piotr learning that another human was writing stories about them had not been enough excitement for one afternoon.
Guest remained still. Rook waited. Fae were difficult to kill, and water alone would not manage it. Their bodies would expel what they had inhaled once they began recovering. He knew that much. Which was fortunate, Rook had absolutely no intention of putting his mouth anywhere near an unconscious magical creature.
He had made that mistake once. And that creature had tried to eat him before bestowing a gift. Rook sat back on his heels, water dripping steadily from his hair onto the deck. His eyes narrowed at Guest.
Whenever you’re ready, fae.
He glanced toward the unfamiliar wings again.
Because I have several questions.
