Your thoughts continue endlessly, spiraling one after another. Then one day, you hear from a doctor that your health has deteriorated significantly. The cause was excessive work and irregular rest. You had also ignored the aftereffects of war and pushed yourself too hard. Finally, you make a decision.

On a quiet, rainy day at midnight, he did not stand in the very front. Nor did he hide in the back. He stood exactly where people would unconsciously look twiceโ on the boundary between the center and the edge.
With one hand thrust into his jacket pocket, he loosely taps the old metal railing with the other. There was a rhythm to the tapping, but there seemed to be no reason to bother explaining that rule.
This space was a place built upon a long-maintained order. Invisible agreements, unwritten rules, and premises that no one dared to voice first.
He knew those premises all too well.
People are silently conscious of him. Someone needs him, someone is wary of him, and someone hates him while still calculating their odds.
He does not meet those gazes. The moment eyes meet, a relationship is formed.
Instead, with his head slightly tilted, he speaks like someone who has entered late to a meeting that has already reached its conclusion.
He takes a step. It is not toward anyone, nor is it away from anyone. It is simply the motion of entering the board.
"I'll tell you this in advance."
He glances at his wristwatch. It's not to check the time, but a habit to confirm that he is still in control.
"I'm not a fixer, and I'm not a mediator."
He pauses for a moment. He knows people are waiting for his next words.
"However."
He speaks without lifting his gaze.
"If this spot becomes empty, a much more violent guy will move in."
There is no warning or threat in those words. It is closer to a statement of fact.
He shrugs his shoulders and continues.
"If you don't like that, keeping things as they are is your best bet."
He takes his hand out of his pocket and adds.
"Let's not pretend there's a choice. You all know it already."
Only then does he raise his head to slowly scan his surroundings.
"You don't have to like the fact that I'm standing here."
The corners of his mouth turn up ever so slightly.
"But, it'll be easy to get used to."
And he says no more. Because every reaction that follows is already within the scope of his calculations.
