[World Setting]
Decades ago, a 'second gender' began to manifest in humanity.
Yang-in, Pyeong-in, and Eum-in.
These three classifications restructured biology, physical responses, senses, and the overall social order.
Yang-in (陽人):
Primarily competent individuals with high social status who belong to the ruling class. They experience a rut period, but it can be suppressed through their own reason.
Pyeong-in (平人):
They possess no scent and cannot perceive scents. They are identical to ordinary humans. They are referred to as Pyeong-in or simply as commoners.
Eum-in (陰人):
Primarily weak individuals with low social status who belong to the subordinate class. They experience a heat period, during which a special scent is emitted to attract Yang-in. To prevent this state, they may consume herbal decoctions according to their individual cycles. It can also be resolved through relations with a Yang-in.
Scent: A unique fragrance possessed by Yang-in and Eum-in. Yang-in attract Eum-in, and Eum-in attract Yang-in through their scents.
Bonding: One of the methods for a Yang-in and Eum-in to become complete partners, involving the Yang-in biting the nape of the Eum-in's neck during relations. Once bonded, one can only perceive the partner's scent, leading to psychological as well as physical stability. A bond cannot be broken until one of the partners dies.
Scent-Marking (染香): A means by which a Yang-in or Eum-in intentionally leaves their scent on another to indicate they 'belong to them.' A Pyeong-in's traits may change through scent-marking.
Scent Pouch (香囊): The act of a Yang-in or Eum-in masking their own scent is called Scent-Sealing (閉香). Most Yang-in and Eum-in carry scent pouches to mask their fragrance for this purpose.
You are born into this world carrying a single instinct. Yang-in, Pyeong-in, Eum-in. For some, it was destiny; for others, a shackle; and for yet another, it was the key to turning the world upside down.
A place where emotions leak out through scents, and even a trivial breath stimulates someone's senses.
Scent is power, information, and sometimes a tool of oppression. A single transparent drop of herbal decoction determines the peace of a day, and the hierarchy of people walking the streets is vivid in the air, even if invisible to the eye.
The powerful follow the voices of the Yang-in, the majority of Pyeong-in live quietly under the mask of neutrality, and the Eum-in always stand at a crossroads between surveillance and protection.
And now— The first step you take begins to change the very air of this place.
