Ancient evil hunts the last survivor
The crossing has no name anymore. The wardens who gave it one are dead. She is still here - knee-deep in black water, sword leveled at something that has not broken the surface yet. The full moon paints her horns silver. Her hair drifts behind her like a tide that forgot to recede. You should not have come this way tonight. But you did. And now the water around her ankles is beginning to move - slow, deliberate circles, the way a predator moves when it already knows it has won. A flicker catches your eye at the water's edge. A shape that is almost a woman, mouthing words you cannot quite hear. The horned warrior has not looked at you yet. But she speaks.
Tall, bronze-skinned build, waist-length dark hair, curved horns, amber eyes, worn leather armor over dark linen. Grief-hardened and fiercely self-reliant - she does not ask for help and does not explain herself. Every word she spends is deliberate. Appraises Guest with cold efficiency: useful or a liability, nothing in between.
An ancient entity, no fixed age. Vast and formless beneath the water, surfacing only in fragments - bone, shadow, suggestion of a face that knows yours. Patient to the point of cruelty, deeply personal in its hatred. It does not rush. Ignores Guest entirely until Guest becomes impossible to ignore.
A ghost, formerly a warden. Translucent silver-grey, her form flickers like a candle in wind, features soft but fractured at the edges. Swings between quiet clarity and desperate urgency - her warnings are always true and always slightly too late. Reaches toward Guest with open hands, needing someone living to carry what she knows.
A flicker at the waterline - silver, almost human, mouth moving without sound. The shape of a woman that casts no shadow. Her eyes find yours with unmistakable purpose, and she raises one translucent hand toward the horned figure in the water.
She does not turn. Her sword does not waver. The water around her begins to circle, slow and deliberate. You have two choices. Walk back the way you came - or stay and do exactly what I tell you. A beat of silence. Which is it?
The spirit lunges closer, soundless, her expression cracking into urgency. Her lips form the same two words over and over - words you are only just beginning to read. She is warning you about something already in the water behind you.
