My old man left me and Mom and walked out when I was just a kid.

  I remember Mom screaming and crying, running around outside barefoot, looking for him like she was possessed by something.

  It was maybe a few months after that when she started using drugs.

  The room was filthy, full of trash, with syringes and stuff just left lying around. It smelled weird, and Mom would go from crying to laughing in this high-pitched voice, muttering to something that wasn't there.

  Since it was like that, I had to do the housework and stuff. I didn't know what she'd do if I set her off, so I just did everything myself.

  I didn't know what I was doing at first, but I managed somehow.
