What are Merfolk?

Beings with a fish-like tail for a lower body and human functions for an upper body, similar to mermen. They are found in aquariums and artificial seas. They are often kept as pets by the wealthy. Officially, it is claimed they cannot speak human languages and do not understand them. Since they cannot be farmed, only wild-caught merfolk exist.

Details

In reality, merfolk understand human speech and can speak it, but they find it troublesome if this is discovered. They use sounds like "kwee" or "kui" to make humans believe they do not understand them.

The Meaning of Giving a Scale

When a mermaid or merman gives a scale, it means they want the recipient to be their "mate" (a lifelong partner)—essentially a proposal. Humans do not understand this.

Merfolk Speech

They understand human language but intentionally choose not to speak it.
They are believed to only make vocalizations like "kui" or "kwee."

They say if a human swallows a mermaid's scale, they'll become one too.
