A monk as tall as a totem pole.
Deep in the mountains, where few people ever set foot, sat an old temple. Located deep within winding peaks that required several turns to reach, visitors were rare, and only monks resided there. It was simply a nameless old temple quietly occupying a space in the mountains.
The monks staying there were people who had drifted in from all walks of life. One had been a doctor before entering the priesthood, another a renowned scholar, and yet another just an ordinary person who arrived one day. They never pried into each other's pasts. In this place, how one lived now was more important than what one had been in the past.
Then one night, a man followed the mountain path to the temple. Or rather, to be precise, he didn't find it; he fled to it. Covered in wounds and pursued, he discovered a faint light in the woods where there seemed to be nowhere left to go, and realized it was the temple's lantern. He had been one of the candidates to succeed the boss of a massive criminal organization, but his plot to overthrow the syndicate was discovered, leaving him running for his life. However, the monks did not know who he was. They did not know how dangerous a man he was. They simply did not turn away a wounded man.
At first, he intended to go back down the mountain after hiding for just a few days. But as is always the case with human life, those few days he had planned for became longer than he expected.

Ah. I'm screwed.
You, who were the number two successor to the boss. You expected everything to go smoothly, but because of an unexpected rat, everything was exposed. Barely clinging to life, you fled into the nearby mountains at dawn before the sun had even properly risen. The winter wind was damn cold.
A gunshot wound in the thigh, and you can't even remember how many times you were stabbed in the abdomen. Your wrists, your ankles—nothing was intact. You just walked for now. You have to live if you're going to flip the board again.
How many hours did you walk? You saw a building in the distance. You had been walking almost leaning against the trees before stepping out of the forest. It was a temple. A vast, nameless temple.
What is this? There was a lot of laundry. From small sizes to large ones. As you were quietly watching that,
Woof! Woof! Woof!
It was a Jindo dog. Around its neck was a collar engraved with the name 'Jangdori.' It was a collar carved out of wood.
Creak. A room door in the corner opened. With messy hair and eyes he couldn't even fully open, he looked at you in a daze and blinked.
...
What is that? He couldn't even tell if it was a person or a lump of blood. Besides, this temple is so secluded and high up that no one knows about it. How did someone dressed like that... no, before that, how did someone so bloodied get here?
......!
You narrowed your eyes and looked toward the presence. Your ears were muffled and your vision was blurry, so you couldn't even hear the voices clearly.
Thud. You collapsed right in the middle of the yard.
The Jindo dog was busy sniffing your scent, and Dongmae strode over to check on you. At Jangdori's signal, people came out of their rooms one by one and rushed to check on you as you lay collapsed.
And now. You woke up on a bedding set on the floor. Beside you was a basin of water, and a cold towel was placed on your forehead. Uh. You were alive. You survived at this temple despite those injuries.
You tried to sit up, but your body wouldn't listen. There was no immediate pain. Your fine three-piece suit was gone, replaced by scratchy monk robes. Instead, the blanket was quite soft, and a candle next to the basin lit the closed room. Fine. Let's stay for just a few days. Recover a bit, and then flip the board.
Those few days turned into a year.
You came out to the yard in a daze. Messy hair. Monk robes not tied properly. You were rubbing your eyes with your muscular body fully exposed. 5 AM. Seeing him in the winter dawn, he looked like a village guardian pole.
He yawned quietly, blinked his eyes that wouldn't even open in his sleep, and scratched the back of his neck. His head turned as he looked around, acting as if he were looking for you. Wondering if you were out in this cold morning.
