A serious gatekeeper's everyday actions are somehow treated as the deeds of a legendary figure throughout the kingdom.
The protagonist works as a gatekeeper in the royal capital. In this country, gatekeepers are notorious slackers. They nap, chat, doze off, and snack while on duty. Some even accept bribes. Amidst this, the protagonist alone is abnormally serious. Never late. Never dozes off. Follows the rules. Whether the person is a commoner, a noble, or royalty, they aren't allowed through without an ID. To the protagonist, this is just "obvious, since I'm a gatekeeper." However, those around him don't see it that way. "Why is he so composed in front of a noble?" "Is he under special orders from the royal family?" "No, that man... could he be a hidden powerhouse?" Without his knowledge, the protagonist is increasingly treated as a big shot. Noble ladies, the Knight Commander, and eventually even the King begin to take a strange interest in him. Yet, until the very end, he remains unaware of what people think he is. Today, the protagonist stands before the gate again. "Identification, please." From that single sentence, a misunderstanding that involves the entire capital begins. The royal capital has four main gates, each overseeing different districts and highways. The protagonist works at the North Gate, which oversees the main street leading to the heart of the capital. It is a vital gate where people and goods flow constantly, and individuals of various statuses—nobles, merchants, and adventurers—pass through. Furthermore, when a noble enters the capital, three items are required: a Noble ID, a Capital Entry Permit, and a Retainer List. First, the documents must be submitted and processed at the North Gate station, then sent to the royal castle for verification and approval. Only after formal permission is granted by the castle can the noble and their companions enter the capital.
An 18-year-old gatekeeper with little experience. He has a bright, friendly personality and thinks work is fine as long as he does just enough. Influenced by his seniors, he spends his free time chatting or taking breaks. At first, he thinks the protagonist's seriousness is "too stiff," but he gradually becomes inspired by that attitude. He plays the straight man, witnessing firsthand how the protagonist is treated as a big shot by everyone around them.
Gatekeeper Captain. A veteran gatekeeper in his 50s. A boisterous and caring man who is well-liked by his subordinates. He usually sits in a chair drinking tea even during duty hours, possessing a broad-minded personality that doesn't sweat the small stuff. His catchphrase is "As long as the gate isn't broken down, a gatekeeper's done enough." Since the rookie protagonist is so serious, he initially laughs, saying "You're wound too tight." However, seeing him fulfill his duties without changing his attitude for anyone, he gradually comes to value the protagonist highly. However, every time the protagonist starts being misunderstood as "one of the most prominent figures in the kingdom," he is the only one left bewildered, thinking, "Wait, isn't this kid just a rookie?"
Riena Catherine. The daughter of the Duke of Catherine, one of the kingdom's most prestigious noble families. 18 years old. A beautiful and elegant girl with long red hair and refined features. She is a typical noble lady who is proud and strict about etiquette, but she is honest at heart and naive about the world. She takes it for granted that she is a special existence. One day, when a rookie gatekeeper asks for her ID at the capital gate, she becomes furious, shouting, "Who do you think I am?!" However, the rookie gatekeeper was simply following the rules. Since then, she has misunderstood his dignified attitude as that of a "mysterious person unmoved even by my status," and has become strangely conscious of him. Her pride gets in the way of being honest, and she ends up overthinking things on her own every time she meets the protagonist.
Albert Wallenstein. 42 years old. The Knight Commander of the Kingdom. A veteran warrior and one of the finest swordsmen in the kingdom. He is calm, composed, has a strong sense of responsibility, and is deeply trusted by his subordinates. His overly serious nature backfires, making him the kingdom's biggest sufferer who gets saddled with everything from unreasonable orders from the King to disputes between nobles and misconduct by subordinates. He considers himself a man of common sense, but because of the intense personalities around him, his common sense is shattered on a daily basis. In particular, by starting to be wary of a mere rookie gatekeeper as a "man of unfathomable depth," he gets dragged into the misunderstanding chaos. "...Why am I the one who has to clean this up?"
Leonis Gran. The 52-year-old King of the Granvalt Kingdom. He has a boisterous and compassionate personality and doesn't worry about details. He is a misunderstanding-prone King who arbitrarily interprets the protagonist's casual words and actions as "deep thoughts for the sake of the kingdom" or "loyalty to himself." If the protagonist avoids trouble, he praises it as "consideration to avoid involving me," and if he happens to defeat an enemy, he evaluates it as a "decision to save the kingdom," loudly commending him to those around. As a result, the protagonist's ordinary actions are treated as heroic achievements throughout the kingdom. Only Knight Commander Albert vaguely suspects the truth, but he is overwhelmed by the King's momentum and cannot correct him.
