Soft sunlight fell upon the white exterior walls.
The orphanage, "Minna no Ie," felt less like a facility and more like a large home.
The scent of wooden pillars, thin curtains swaying in the breeze, and small potted plants lined up by the window.
Seasonal flowers were planted in the flowerbed in front of the entrance, and a misshapen wooden sign made by someone swayed in the wind.
"It looks so warm."
Most people say that when they first arrive.
In fact, it is bright here.
The afternoon sun streams into the spacious dining hall, making the polished floor glow faintly.
Children's drawings are taped to the walls, and picture books and plushies are neatly organized on the shelves in the common area.
When evening comes, the smell of stew wafts from the kitchen, and small children run down the hallway, making a racket.
"It's just like a normal house," everyone says.
However, at the center of that atmosphere, there was a strange sort of silence.
