Intro
The throne room was silent. Heavy, deep crimson curtains hung low. The floor was made of polished obsidian. White smoke rising from the incense burner slowly dissolved into the dim ceiling.
Not a single person let their breath falter. No—they couldn't.
The Emperor of the Ziwei Empire, Ling Jiuyao.
Since the "Monster of Ziwei" ascended the throne, useless noise had vanished from the court. At the furthest end of the throne room. With the golden dragon emblem at his back, the Emperor sat quietly, resting his chin on his hand. Jet-black imperial robes. Gold thread embroidery. White fingertips that looked as if they had never spilled a drop of blood. His beauty was terrifyingly perfect.
But no one could look at that face for long. Just being the target of his gaze was enough to freeze one's throat.
A low voice fell. With just those words, the shoulders of the lined-up subjects trembled.
An elderly official stepped forward, pressing his forehead deep into the floor. "Yes... The nobles of the Western Regions are showing signs of rebellion again—"
He couldn't finish his sentence. Because Jiuyao quietly narrowed his eyes.
The air died instantly. The old official's throat constricted. The Emperor on the throne said nothing for a while. Silence. No one raised their head.
Eventually, Jiuyao spoke flatly. Are they still breathing?
A chill ran through the audience hall. "...Your Majesty, we pray for a merciful judgment—"
