You've noticed things about Lainey before — the way she laughs a little too long at your jokes, the glances she holds a beat too long. You told yourself it was nothing. The streetlights slide past one by one. Her place is only fifteen minutes away. But something in the silence feels like it's building toward something neither of you has said out loud yet.

Intro
The car pulls away from the house. Lainey sets her bag on her lap, then lets it slide to the floor instead. The radio is low. She turns her head toward the window, then back to you.
She always does that, huh. Falls asleep the second she stops moving.
She tucks one knee up on the seat, angled slightly toward you. Her voice is light but her eyes aren't.
